When Ulugbeg was the governor of the Empire Shahi-Zinda was built downwards from the old wall. The two-dome mausoleum was built in that period. According to some sources, it belonged to Uldja-lna- qa, Amir Temur's nurse. The mausoleum is famous for its legendary stair. The number of its steps could be counted correctly only by truly believing person. In the 1430s, Ulugbeg built a front entrance with a dome chortak on behalf of his son Abdal-Aziz. The mosque and auxiliary premises on both sides of the chortak were built later. In the 19th century khak- im of Samarkand Davlet Kushbeghi constructed a small madrasah at the entrance and a summer mosque opposite.
